Forest

                                                                   Forest

Today I want to talk about “forest” The forest is a great asset of earth. In the forest, there are a lot of creatures, or biodiversity. Moreover, the forest store carbon as well, it plays an important role for diminishing greenhouse gas. The forest also prevents erosion or mudslide.

However, human activity in worldwide destroy a lot of forest. Take Amazon for example, the world’s biggest rainforest.  In barely 40 years, the area of Amazon’s rainforest has reduced by 20 percents, these area are use to be cattle ranches or s

oybean farms, and 90percents of these soybean are used to feed livestock and poultry.

Despite Amazon, in the north of Indonesia, the world’s 4th biggest island, Borneo, where used to cover by the vast primary forest, but barely 20 years, it was totally disappeared within 10 years; this catastrophe was provoked by the decision to produce palm oil. Palm oil is one of the most productive and consumed oils in the world. Palm oil not only feed to our growing demand for food but also cosmetics, detergents, and increasingly, alternative fuels. Therefore, the forest’s diversity was replaced by the single species, the palm tree. This is an agriculture industry; it provides employment, revenue for local people.

Another example of massive deforestation is the eucalyptus. Eucalyptus is used to make paper pulp. Plantation is growing as demand for paper has increased five times in past 50 years. At the foot of these eucalyptus trees nothing grows because their leaves form a toxic bed for most other plants. They grow quickly, but exhaust water reserves.

What would happen if we still develop our earth without limitation? Let’s us

take smaller and sampler island for example, the Rapanui,  or called Easter Island. Easter Island is in the southeastern in Pacific Ocean. The most famous objects in the Rapanui are the large stone status, or Moai. Rapanui formed one of the most brilliant civilizations in the pacific but they face the problem of overpopulation and lacking resources

Living in this isolated island, the Rapanui exploited their resources until there was nothing left. The Rapanui chopped all the tree down for lumber.  And then, the Rapanui could no longer go fishing, because there are no tree to build canoes , besides they faced widespread soil erosion ,their social become unrest, and eventually their civilization did not survive.

All in all , we have better to do something good for our earth , ride bicycle or walk as much as possible, or do recycle, at least do something we can do .
